As a child I participated at Schwarzenberg in Vorarlberg in a race that took place every year that time. It was one of the most famous ski races all over the world. Though I fell into the snow more than once per run I always won my class. I always was the only participator in my class. After 1988 i stopped ski racing for a very long time.
In the end of 2004 I was called by my club. They asked me to take part in the championship for Vienna and Lower Austria. I accepted. The race was planned for January 22nd, 2005. Because of a snow storm on that day it was cancelled. But on December 4th, that means one winter later, the race could be started. It was a giant slalom in the west of Lower Austria.
results (standing class):
rank name class time 1st run 2nd run 1 Hubert Mandl LW 4 1:10,29 35,39 34,90 2 Günther Hirnböck LW 6/8-2 1:19,04 39,50 39,54 3 Dennis Wliszczak LW 2 1:36,76 48,28 48,48 4 Walter Brandhofer LW 2 1:48,90 56,60 52,30
LW 2 = above-knee amputee LW 4 = below-knee amputee LW 6/8 = arm amputee
Unfortunately, I don't have any chance against my stronger opponents who practice much more often. The next race I participated in was not far away. It took place on January 8th, 2006. This time, unfortunately, nobody could find me in the final rankings. I missed the last gate of the second run. I was disqualified.
