report:

On June 18th the high-jump event was scheduled. Surprisingly there were 5 starters in the class F 42. So we could have our own event and were not forced to start in the group of F 44 and F 46 (below-knee and arm amputees).
The first height - chosen by the greek competitor - was 1.40 m. So I still had some time, I would do my first jump at 1.50 m.

This day the weather was not the best. One problem was the wind, which made it hard for us to time the run correctly. Furthermore I noticed that my form was not the best and between the attempts I was cold and impatient.
The jump over 1.56 m, as the german athlete Heinrich Popow told me, was pretty close already. The polish competitor on the other hand entered the event at that height. He did it in his 2nd attempt. At 1.59 only the polish guy and myself were left, both of us came over the bar in our 2nd attempts.
At that time I was in the lead. Leszek had two failures overall, I had one. I would have been European Champion if nobody jumped the 1.62 m. But my polish collegue had absolutely no problems to jump the new height of 1.62 m in his first jump. I missed three times without any chance to clear. Hristo Gerganski was third with 1.56 m.
